The Main Causes of Demon Oppression: unforgiveness, sexual immorality and occult Involvement

Demon oppression is one of the most overlooked realities in the Christian life. While Christians cannot be “possessed” in the sense of ownership—because believers belong to Jesus—they can experience oppression, torment, and influence in their mind, emotions, habits, and relationships. Oppression often manifests through anxiety, cycles of sin, intrusive thoughts, depression, nightmares, fear, addiction, and spiritual heaviness.

Scripture consistently reveals that certain behaviors and heart conditions open spiritual doors to the enemy (Ephesians 4:27). Among the many possible entry points, three stand out as the most common and spiritually destructive forces that invite demonic oppression into a person’s life:

  • Unforgiveness
  • Sexual Immorality
  • Occult Involvement

This article explores each of these gateways, why they are spiritually dangerous, and how to close them through repentance, forgiveness, and deliverance.

1. Unforgiveness: The Silent Prison Door That Lets Demons In

Unforgiveness is one of the strongest and most common roots of demonic oppression. Jesus directly taught that refusing to forgive places a person under spiritual torment:

“And his master was angry and delivered him to the tormentors, until he should pay all that was due him. So My heavenly Father also will do to you if each of you, from his heart, does not forgive his brother his trespasses.”
— Matthew 18:34–35

The “tormentors” (or “jailers”) symbolize spiritual beings that have legal access to afflict a person who holds onto bitterness.

1.1 Why Unforgiveness Opens the Door

Unforgiveness creates a spiritual environment where demons flourish because:

  • It hardens the heart and blocks love.
  • It keeps emotional wounds open and unhealed.
  • It attaches a person to the offense and the offender.
  • It empowers spirits of bitterness, resentment, anger, hatred, and retaliation.
  • It restricts the flow of God’s grace into emotional areas of pain.

Bitterness becomes a spiritual poison that spreads through a person’s life, affecting relationships, mental health, and spiritual sensitivity.

1.2 Signs of Demon Oppression from Unforgiveness

  • Intrusive memories and emotional flashbacks.
  • Persistent anger or irritability, especially when thinking about a specific person.
  • A cycle of broken or conflict-filled relationships.
  • Difficulty praying or feeling God’s presence.
  • Tormenting thoughts and mental “arguments” with someone who hurt you.
  • Chronic heaviness, hopelessness, or emotional numbness.

1.3 Closing the Door of Unforgiveness

Forgiveness does not mean:

  • Approving of what was done.
  • Trusting the person again immediately.
  • Forgetting or denying the pain.

Forgiveness simply means:

  • Releasing the person to God’s justice.
  • Giving up your right to revenge.
  • Allowing God to heal the wound instead of keeping it open.
  • Ending satan’s legal justification to torment you.

When unforgiveness is renounced from the heart, deliverance often happens quickly—because bitterness, anger, and resentment lose their spiritual grip.

2. Sexual Immorality: The “One Flesh” Doorway to Demonic Influence

Sexual sin is one of the most spiritually dangerous sins because it involves the body, soul, emotions, and spirit.

“Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body.”
— 1 Corinthians 6:18

Sexual immorality includes:

  • Pornography and sexualized media.
  • Fornication (sex outside of marriage).
  • Adultery.
  • Masturbation tied to lustful fantasy.
  • Homosexual acts.
  • Incest and sexual abuse.
  • Prostitution and transactional sex.
  • Bestiality.
  • Sexual rituals and demonic sex dreams (incubus/succubus).
  • Any sexual activity outside biblical marriage.

2.1 Why Sexual Sin Opens Demonic Doors

Sexual sin is spiritually unique because it creates soul ties—deep bonding of emotion, memory, and affection—even in so-called “casual” encounters. When sexual sin occurs:

  • A person becomes spiritually and emotionally connected to their partner.
  • They inherit emotional and spiritual baggage from that union.
  • Demons that operate in the partner’s life can gain access.
  • Shame and guilt act as spiritual toxins that attract unclean spirits.
  • The mind becomes darkened and open to spirits of lust and perversion.

Sexual sin also distorts a person’s identity, confidence, and ability to form godly relationships. It wounds self-worth and often leads to self-hatred and confusion.

2.2 Signs of Demon Oppression from Sexual Sin

  • Compulsive pornography use and inability to stop.
  • Repetitive sexual fantasies or intrusive thoughts.
  • Sexual dreams and nighttime attacks (including spiritual sex encounters).
  • Difficulty bonding emotionally with a spouse or potential spouse.
  • Tormenting memories of past partners.
  • Patterns of sexual sin that repeat even after sincere repentance.
  • Deep shame that feels impossible to shake.
  • Anxiety or depression closely tied to sexual experiences or identity.

2.3 Closing the Door of Sexual Immorality

Deliverance from sexual sin involves:

  • Repentance and Renouncing
Confess specific sexual sins to God, agreeing with His Word and turning away from them.
  • Breaking Ungodly Soul Ties
Verbally break soul ties with past partners, asking Jesus to restore your soul and emotions.
  • Commanding Sexual Spirits to Leave
In Jesus’ name, cast out spirits of lust, perversion, pornography, adultery, fornication, shame, and uncleanness.
  • Rebuilding Purity
Renew your mind with Scripture, set boundaries, and invite accountability so that former patterns are not re-opened.
  • Once the door is truly closed and strongholds are broken, God restores dignity, identity, and emotional wholeness.

    3. Occult Involvement: The Most Direct Gateway to Demonic Oppression

Any form of occult activity—whether intentional or casual—creates a spiritual covenant with darkness. Scripture strongly warns against it:

“There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, or one who practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, or one who conjures spells, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead. For all who do these things are an abomination to the Lord…”
    — Deuteronomy 18:10–12

    Occult involvement includes:

    • Witchcraft, sorcery, spells, and magic.
    • Tarot cards, horoscopes, astrology, and divination.
    • Energy healing, chakras, crystals as spiritual tools.
    • Ouija boards and spirit communication tools.
    • Spirit guides, ancestral spirits, or channeling.
    • Psychics, mediums, and fortune-tellers.
    • New Age rituals, manifestation rituals, and spiritual laws apart from God.
    • Necromancy (speaking with the dead).
    • Blood pacts and occult covenants.
    • Occult-based music, symbols, or objects.

3.1 Why Occult Practices Invite Demons

    The occult involves:

    • Contacting supernatural beings that are not the Holy Spirit.
    • Seeking knowledge, power, or protection apart from God.
    • Using rituals rooted in pagan worship and demonic systems.
    • Making spiritual agreements—spoken or unspoken—with demonic entities.
    • Opening the mind and spirit through altered states or rituals.

The occult is not “harmless fun” or innocent curiosity. It is an invitation, a covenant, and a doorway for oppression and bondage.

3.2 Signs of Demon Oppression from Occult Activity

    • Nightmares, sleep paralysis, or frightening night visitations.
    • Hearing voices, whispers, or receiving “messages.”
    • Unexplained fear, paranoia, or a constant sense of being watched.
    • Shadow figures or dark presences in the home.
    • Sudden or increasing psychic “abilities.”
    • Depression, tormenting thoughts, or suicidal ideation.
    • Objects moving, disturbances, or manifestations in the home.
    • Loss of peace or agitation when exposed to worship or Scripture.

3.3 Closing the Door of the Occult

Deliverance from occult involvement requires decisive action:

    • Confession and Renunciation
Confess specific occult activities by name (e.g., “Lord, I renounce tarot, Reiki, astrology, and seeking spirit guides.”).
    • Destroy Occult Objects
Remove and destroy books, cards, crystals (used spiritually), jewelry, symbols, and tools tied to occult use.
    • Break Covenants and Agreements
Verbally break every pact, ritual, spoken word, or agreement made with spirits, even if done “for fun.”
    • Cast Out Occult Spirits
Command spirits of witchcraft, divination, sorcery, familiar spirits, and any other related demons to leave in the name of Jesus.
    • Fill the House and Mind with God’s Presence
Read Scripture aloud, worship, and dedicate your home and life to the Lord.
    • When the occult door is shut, torment often stops dramatically, and the atmosphere of the home changes.

      4. Walking in Freedom After Deliverance

Closing these three major doors—unforgiveness, sexual immorality, and occult involvement—is a powerful step, but deliverance must be followed by discipleship. To maintain freedom:

      4.1 Stay in the Word

God’s Word is the primary tool for renewing the mind and guarding the heart. As you read, study, and meditate on Scripture, lies are exposed and replaced with truth.

4.2 Develop a Strong Prayer Life

Prayer builds spiritual strength and keeps you sensitive to the Holy Spirit. Daily conversation with God helps you detect early when the enemy tries to re-open old doors.

      4.3 Keep a Clean Heart

Don’t allow bitterness, secret sin, or compromise to accumulate. Quickly forgive, confess, and renounce anything that grieves the Holy Spirit. Short accounts with God keep doors closed.

4.4 Don’t Return to Old Habits

Even “small” compromises—one video, one call, one flirtation, one reading—can re-open doors that God closed. You don’t owe your past life another visit.

      4.5 Surround Yourself with Believers

Freedom grows in community. Stay connected to a Bible-believing church. Seek mature believers for support and accountability. We battle together, not alone.

      5. Final Encouragement: Jesus Breaks Every Chain

If you recognize one or more of these doorways in your life—unforgiveness, sexual immorality, or occult involvement—do not fear and do not fall into condemnation. The same Jesus who healed the broken, cast out demons, and restored sinners still works today.

The doors may have been opened through your own choices, through trauma, or through ignorance, but God’s mercy is greater than any doorway. Freedom is not just possible— it is promised to those who turn to Jesus with a sincere heart.

A Simple Prayer for Closing These Doors

Lord Jesus Christ, I come to You and acknowledge that I have opened doors to the enemy. I confess unforgiveness, sexual sin, and any involvement in the occult. I repent and turn away from these things. I choose to forgive everyone who has hurt me and I release them to You.

I renounce every sexual sin I have committed and every ungodly soul tie I have formed. I renounce every occult practice, ritual, or agreement I have participated in. In Your name, I break their power over my life.

Now, in the name of Jesus, I command every spirit of bitterness, unforgiveness, lust, perversion, witchcraft, divination, and any other spirit that gained access through these doors to leave me now. I belong to Jesus—spirit, soul, and body.

Holy Spirit, fill every area of my life that has been emptied. Teach me to walk in purity, forgiveness, and obedience. Thank You, Lord, that whom the Son sets free is free indeed. Amen.

If you continue to experience strong oppression after praying, consider seeking help from a mature deliverance minister or pastor. You are not alone in this battle—and Jesus is still the Deliverer.
